Description
Verdite is a hard, mostly green, semiprecious stone found in South Africa. The stoneworkers/stone carvers in the Shona tribe, in whose territory much valuable workable stone is found, have been famous for centuries. Until the last 60 years, most of the carving has been of African abstract or utilitarian nature, but in 1980, the "Fine Artists" school of sculpture was begun. (School in the sense of art with unifying characteristics, not in the sense of a place of learning). Nicholas Tandi (along with younger brothers James Tandi and John Tandi) are early masters in this school of art.Verdite and some of the other very hard stones enables the artists to achieve detail and texture not achievable in the softer serpentines. Their sculptures are representational and emotional representations of people and animals, and match any sculptors in the world in their sensitivity and the ability to represent mood and emotion. They are collected all over the world in museums and private collections.
James Tandi (b. 1956) is the sculptor. Google these artists for rave reviews and to compare prices.
